Weingut Stadt Krems Kremstal DAC Reserve Kögl Riesling 2007

Out for a good bit of riesling, I picked up this Austrian wine which I am sure I have not tried before. Opened to a lovely clean bouquet of apricot, peach, honey, slate, flint and a touch of lemon. On the palate it showed lovely minerals, with clean fruits with honey. Weight was light to mid and nicely toned, with a soft dry finish. Quite a lovely riesling.

Toolangi Estate Chardonnay 2006

Was pleased to see this wine in store, as I rember the 2002 vintage being outstanding. Opened to aromas of melon, cashews, herbs, citrus, cream, nougat and a little ginger and spice. On the palate it was well balanced with fruits and oak tightly integrated. Finish was lengthy and dry. Again a very classy chardonnay, and although not up there with the 2002, still wonderful drinking.

Comoara Pivnitei Tamaioasa Romaneasca 1996 dulce

Pale golden in colour with a honey syrup lime bouquet. A smooth viscous feel in the mouth with honey, pineapple a tinge of grass like a Riesling. With a strong vein of acid to cleanse the palate, this wine could have been aged for at least another ten years and still be a brilliant wine. This reminded me of a younger Moulin Touchais

Hopefully I will have the time to do some more wine blogging.

Château Tour du Haut-Moulin 2001

Some Claret for dinner, this time a Haut-Médoc made from 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot. Opened to lingering aromas of black berry, raspberry, strawberry, coffee, earth and cedar. On the palate it was well balanced with soft ripe tannins, nice minerals and a longish finish. Quite an old fashioned Claret in style, but very nice drinking.

Toscar Monastrell 2006

A red from Alicante, this Monastrell showed rustic aromas of plums, cherries, animal musk, ham, earth and a little spice. The palate was again rustic and generous, with lots of fruit, herbs, pepper and ripe tannins. Nice length and finish, this was enjoyable.

Livio Felluga Friulano DOC 2007

Out at dinner I ordered 1 bottle of this white wine made from Friulano (formerly Tocai), remembering a great white (Terre Alte) from Felluga I did have in Milan last year. Opened to soft aromas of citrus, flowers, almonds, peach, some tropicals and white pepper. On the palate it was very well balanced, with good weight, minerals and a slight salty dryness. Overall quite an elegant wine, which did impress.

Brezza Dolcetto d'Alba Fossati 2007

Some Italian red for dinner, this opened to aromas of cherries, amarone, earth, pepper and smoke. On the palate it was well balanced, with pure fruit over nice tannins. Good mouthfeel and length. Needs a bit of air. Not bad.

Leo Buring Eden Valley Riesling 2004

A vintage I have not tried, this Leo Buring opened to aromas lime, lemon, pears, flowers, honey, musk and spice. The palate was developing still with good acidity, minerals, clean fruits and juice. This was quite a lovely reisling, which is still developing further. Very good.

Vasse Felix Heytesbury Cabernet Malbec Shiraz 2005

Being quite a fan of the standard VF Cab Sav, was curious to try their flagship Cab Sav. Opened to aromas of cherries, cassis, olives, earth, cab leaf, menthol, chocolate and spice. On the palate it was quite dense with alcohol heat just under control, with ripe fruit and tannins, quite good structure and good length. Overall quite complex and rich, but somehow I prefer their standard Cab Sav which seems a little more savoury and compelling.

Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2003

As I move away from Bordeaux, I treated myself to this Chateauneuf, which is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre and others. After some time decanting, the nose showed over time aromas of raspberry, roasted chicken, manure, earth, vanilla, nuts, cinnamon and some caramel. On the palate it was light to mid bodied, with silky tannins and a soft drying lengthy finish. All up for me a lovely "animalistic" and feminine result, which I loved.

Croix De Beaucaillou 2003

Almost done with my recent Bordeaux run. This time a wine from Saint-Julien, and the 2nd wine from the 2nd growth Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Opened to aromas of berries, vanilla, earth, spice and a touch of oak. The palate was very elegant, with superfine tannins and soft fruits and minerals in an almost ethereal interplay. Very feminine in structure, this was one of the standout Bordeaux's from the last few months. Excellent.

Montes Classic Series Sauvignon Blanc 2008

A cheap white from Chile, this opened to aromas of green apples, melon, citrus, passionfruit and florals. On the palate it was clean, crisp, balanced and dry, nothing really out of place. All up a nicely made SB which is very good value at under $10.

Roda Reserva 2004

Was happy to have a new vintage of this Rioja after having the 2003 last year in Granada. Opened to aromas of cherries, licorice, plum, chocolate, raspberries, violet, coffee beans, vanilla and some earth notes. The palate was well balanced with fruit, tannins and acid all harmoniously working together. Over time it just got smoother and better. Again a superb wine which I highly recommend.

Granrojo Garnacha 2007

Something from Spain for dinner, this Garnacha opened to quite a generous bouquet of plum, raspberry, licorice, baked earth, cola and pepper. The palate held fine tannins, minerals and generous but controlled fruits. Structurally it was soft, warm and round, with not a lot of depth but still quite a nice and generous wine.

Chateau Kirwan Margaux 2001

Nearly done with these Bordeauxs. This Margaux opened to a bouquet of black fruits, nuts, flowers, raisins, flowers and some oak. The palate was quite solid and balanced, with good acidity and ripe tannins, but somehow was a little boring, which left me a tad disappointed. Still a solid wine, just lacks a little flair, and perhaps input.
