A New Year dozen

Just purchased a mixed case of wines from Vintage Cellars, as they are having a 20% off sale. Look forward to polishing them off over January.

2004 Cabernet D'Anjou Reserve Des Vignerons X 3
2005 Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Riesling X 2
2004 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages
2003 Chateau Laulerie Montravel Vin Blanc
2005 Yalumba Christobel's Dry White
2005 Tahbilk Viognier
2004 Temple Bruer Chenin Blanc
2001 Temple Bruer Shiraz Malbec
2005 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

Have finished these off now, and on the whole not a bad case. Everything was quite good, especially the Cabernet D'Anjou, which is such a great rose. I did have resevations over the Tahbilk Viognier, which was a touch rubbery, and had a disconcerting grassy smell on the back. Also the Cloudy Bay Sav Blanc which I did drink a fair bit in the '90s, it doesn't seem that great now, and was simply bored with it.

Zanna

Last night had an interesting red wine from Italy, a 1998 Zanna Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. From the same makers of Riparosso, a very cheap and very good value Montepulciano, this was similar to the Riparosso, but with more weight, and balance. Very nice bouquet of sour cherry, with hints of honey and earth. Very soft and smooth on the palate, quite dry and had decent length. A fine dry red indeed, but costing 3 times more than the Riparosso, I think a little too pricey in comparison. Maybe the sexy labeling (my bottle not pictured here) pushes the price up.
