Tyrrells Old Winery Pinot Noir 2005

Was going to drink this after dinner, but after tasting a little decided not to. Bouquet was thin and lolly-like, and the palate the same. So straight back into the bottle and will use for a Coc Au Vin.

McWilliam's Inheritance Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2005

A cheap $7 white, this SSB had a soft tropical boquet, with citrus, melon, lychees and herbs. On the palate it was very well balanced, with more citrus and herbs. Relatively light in body and short on length, it was nonetheless enjoyable drinking, and had nothing offensive about it. A good cheap summer white, which did very well with our meal of roast chicken and fennel.

Wolf Blass Vintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2001

Having this some months ago, decided to give it a try at dinner on Friday. The bouquet was quite sweet, with bread, biscuit, candied fruit and nuts. On the palate it was nicely balanced, with strawberries dominating with melon and biscuits. The mousse was a little coarse, and the beading did fade somewhat, but not a bad sparkling wine. Would have preferred it drier. Overall a crowd pleaser.

Tyrrell's Old Winery Semillon 2005

Having tried their superb Vat 1 semillon, was curious about one of their base range semillons. Pale straw, the bouquet was very soft and reserved, with lemon and lime dominating, with faint wax, toast and grass aromas underneath. On the palate initally it held nominal carbonation, which dissapated after the first glass, and showed assertive acidity making for a steely flinty feel, balanced with hints of honey and vanilla in the background. Decent length and a bone dry finish made this very elegant drinking, and matched our baked fish dish very well. This is fine semillon, and at $12 excellent value. Definitely would age with confidence.

Pasqua Night Harvest Pinot Grigio Venezie IGT 2005

Rarely finding this wine in retailers, bought a bottle from a restaurant as have tried it some time ago. Pale green gold the bouquet on this was delightful, with green apple, pear, vanilla and herb/flowers. On the palate it was smooth and well balanced with more apple, citrus, herbs and savoury vanilla. Decent length and a soft dry finish makes very pleasant drinking. A distinct well made grigio from Italy.

La Chablisienne Petit Chablis 2003

Having had this Chablis a couple of times in the past, I dont remember ever reviewing it. Pale gold, the bouquet holds melon, pear, nuts, candied peel over a background of vanilla. On the palate it is quite soft and round, perhaps a touch flabby, but acidity is well balanced and is very pleasant drinking. A good example of the style, and not too pricey.

Maison Champy Savigny-Les-Beaune Aux Fourches 2003

Being reduced in priced, tried this Burgundy over dinner with Phil. Ruby in colour, the nose displayed cherries, mulch, herbs and caramel . On the palate it was quite soft and well balanced with dark cherries and forest floor flavours, with soft pepper and caramel. Went very nicely with roast sqaub and mushrooms. A very soft and elegant pinot.

Pertaringa Scarecrow Sauvignon Blanc 2005

Light green gold in hue, the bouquet on this SB from McLaren Vale was fairly muted, with soft powdery citrus, passionfruit and herbs, possibly sage. On the palate it was soft, reasonably balanced acids with orange sherberty flavours, with a grassy herbaceous flavours at the back. Needed a touch more length and structure, but quite an enjoyable softer type SB, in a very elegant stretched Bordeaux bottle.

SHW Pinot Noir 2004

A quick buy from the local, this pinot had quite a promising bouquet of cherries, mulch and a touch of spice and game. Initially bright, rich and mellow on the palate, yet the palate and bouquet faded over the course of the bottle, leaving in the end a very flat wine. Dissapointing, which seems to be the case with most of their wines.

Pikes Vintners Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2004

This wine, another cleanskin from Pikes had on the nose a nice bouquet of classic pinot aromas of cherry, earth, mallow, mulch but not quite truffles. On the palate it was relatively light, dry and reasonably persistant with sour cherry, caramel and spice. Headed slightly towards becoming volitile, probably due to the %14 alcohol. Overall quite impressive for a Pinot Noir under $10, not really that far behind in quality of say a $25 pinot. Great value.

Lake Breeze “Bernoota” Shiraz Cabernet 2002

A blend 60% Shiraz and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon this wine from Langhorne Creek held a big and boofy bouquet of nougat and violets, (which I have experienced in red wines from Langhorne Creek before), blackberries, mint and spices. On the palate it was quite soft, with berries, mint, black pepper and some chocolate. Oak was evident but not that well integrated, making the fruit a touch loose and flabby. Overall not a bad blend.

Delas 2004 St Esprit Cotes-du-Rhone

Got this for Friday night drinks. A deep ruby red colour with red berries, pepper and toast on the nose. On the palata nice rounded tannins and more berry pepper flavour, and a nice medium finish.

Grande Maison Cuvée des Anges Monbazillac 2002

This unwooded Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle blend from the Dordogne was mid-gold in colour, and held aromas of apricot and peach, with some herb and floral notes. Palate wise it was rich and sweet, with a tight dry finish. Good length and mouthfeel. Would suit foie gras and blue cheese.

Chateau Thieuley Bordeaux Blanc Sec 2004

50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon, this wine from Gironde had a lovely integrated boquet of Lemon, Nougat, spice, and hints of grass. On the palate it displayed a rich creamy softness with lemon curd and soft spiced oak, finishing tight and dry. A very well crafted Bordeaux, and more interesting and generous than an example (Chateau Carbonnieux) we had last year, which was 3 times the price.

Pikes Sauvigon Blanc Semillon 2005

This white blend held soft balanced aromas of passionfruit, citrus, cut grass, herbs and traces of nuts. On the palate it was quite clean and citrussy, with a touch of honey and petrol. A little volitile on the finish, but overall not a bad blend. Lacked a little dimension.
