Hanz Herzog Spirit of Malborough Merlot Cabernet 2002
A gift from my colleagues at work, this blend of 60% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec opened to a deep bouquet of red and black fruits, licorice, sweet musk, cedar and hay. On the palate it was again deep, rich and rounded with good balance, acidity and mineral. Finish was long and lingering. Overall quite a big red which is quite French in style. A remarkable red from NZ that would easily cellar further.
For dinner we opened this blend of 80% Tannat and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose were raspberries, blackberry, earth, herbs, oak and some florals. The palate was quite replete with chewy acidity, mineral and lots of dry tannins. Quite deep and persistant, but manages to stay focused and balance. A muscular red but very nice.
Our aperitifs consisted of this white, which we have had before on a few occasions. Opened to a charming nose of dried pineapple, lemon, honey, cream and a touch of grass and herbs. The palate was very well balanced, with acidity very soft. Quite smooth and dry on the finish. Quite lovely and charming - seemed on par with previous vintages but somehow more relaxed and enjoyable.
